Profile

The theatre-makers group de Queeste was set up in 1997 by students from the Toneelacademie Maastricht (NL). Their operating base comprises the entire province of Limburg. Their motivation is to make theatre from our present-day reality, as a critical commentary on the complexity of society today. The theatre company makes politically and socially inspired theatre with the goal of launching a social debate.

De Queeste’s artistic path is determined by a core group of five individuals: Christophe Aussems, Nele Van Rompaey, Helena Van den Berge, Roel Swanenberg and Caroline Fransens. For their projects they often bring in additional external people such as writer Paul Pourveur, musician Tom Kestens or theatre-maker Pieter De Buysser. They see the creation of a new production as a collective quest, in which each person has an important voice in the overall creative process.

De Queeste do not see making theatre as an isolated activity. They often organize discussions to accompany their stage productions. In order to have as much dialogue as possible with their audience, de Queeste performs not only in large theatres, but in small theatres and also on location.

The group’s political and social fascination determines their choice of play and writer. De Queeste always tries to work with new material: by commissioning a play, gathering material themselves or performing a recent play.

In April 2006, de Queeste was in residence at NTGent for one month.
